What is acne?

Acne occurs when tiny hair follicles in your skin become clogged with oil, dirt, or dead skin cells. Acne causes redness and inflammation, whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples.

Clogged pores can also become infected, causing more severe acne that reaches into the deep layers of your skin.

What causes acne?

Acne is primarily caused by excess oil production and bacteria that cause pores to become clogged and inflamed.

Hormones, diet, and stress may also contribute to the condition. Acne is most common among teenagers, but many adults also have acne.

How is acne treated?

Surface acne can be treated with a facial treatment called a chemical peel that causes deep exfoliation. A chemical peel creates a controlled wound that causes several layers of your skin to peel away, revealing new, healthier skin underneath. Types of chemical peels include:

  • Salicylic acid: the most gentle peel; best for very mild acne
  • Alpha hydroxy acid (glycolic acid): a medium strength peel with a 5-7 day recovery period
  • Phenol: a deep peel performed under sedation with a two-week recovery period

For acne that is rooted more deeply within your skin, laser acne treatments may be your best option.

How do laser acne treatments work?

Laser treatments harness concentrated light energy to penetrate below the surface of your skin and target the bacteria that cause acne.

The laser also clears inflammation and triggers cellular renewal, including the production of new collagen and elastin, resulting in a clearer complexion and revitalized skin tissue.

How are acne or surgical scars treated?

Laser therapy is also useful to reduce acne scarring and other types of scars. The focused laser light can break apart scar tissue, which your immune system then eliminates from your skin over time.

The laser stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, and improves circulation, to give your skin a softer, smoother texture in the treatment area.

How many laser scar treatments will I need?

Your experienced Annandale provider designs a custom treatment plan based on your individual skin composition and goals for treatment. In most cases, a series of treatments is needed for best results.
