Lichen Sclerosus Diagnosis and Treatment in Annandale
Lichen sclerosus (LIE-kun skluh-ROW-sus) is a chronic condition that affects people of all ages. Linked to squamous cell carcinoma in women, it’s important to see your OB/GYN for gynecological services right away if you suspect you have this condition.
What Is Lichen Schlerosus?
A condition that typically affects the genital and anal area, lichen sclerosus presents itself as patchy, discolored, thin skin. While anyone can be diagnosed with this skin condition, women who are postmenopausal are at higher risk.
What Causes Lichen Sclerosus?
While an exact cause is unknown at this time, there are a combination of factors that might contribute to the condition. If you have an overactive immune system, if members of your family have had or currently have the condition, and / or if you’ve had previous skin damage / irritation, it’s possible to develop lichen sclerosus.
How Is Lichen Sclerosus Diagnosed?
Your OB/GYN will conduct a visual exam of the affected area. You might also be asked to have a biopsy in order to rule out cancer, especially if you don’t respond to treatment.
How Is Lichen Sclerosus Treated?
In many cases, lichen sclerosus responds well to the following treatments:
• Prescription ointments: Most commonly, topical corticosteroids are prescribed for lichen sclerosus. Your treatment begins with applying this ointment twice a day. After a time determined by your OB/GYN, you’ll reduce application to once a day.
• At-home remedies: Combined with prescription medication, your OB/GYN may recommend at-home remedies including but not limited to applying petroleum jelly to the affected area, using mild soaps to wash the area, taking an oral antihistamine at night to relieve itching, and avoiding irritants that may worsen symptoms.
